I am a freelance software developer in England with fifteen years of professional experience. This page is about my experience, education, and achievements. If you want to see what I’m up to right now, see my now page.
My current focus
Over the past couple of years I have been interested in how technology can be used in a way which is better for our well-being and mental health. There are various terms that have appeared for this including Humane Technology, Digital Wellness, and Digital Minimalism. I write about these topics on my blog, Mindful.technology.
In my software development work, I been working on projects for clients focused on mental health, wellbeing, or ethical living. I’m interested in doing more of these kinds of projects in future.

Experience
I began my career working for Feral Interactive, a major publisher of Mac and Linux video games, from 2007-2016. In my role as Lead Web & Server Developer I:
- was responsible for a large multi-lingual website with a global e-commerce store;
- developed numerous internal tools including a database of the company’s products;
- led development of an online multiplayer gaming platform, Calico.
Since 2017, I have been working freelance on a range of website / software development and technical consulting projects. I was Lead Developer (on a freelance basis) for Recombix on a number of projects. I have also worked directly with my own clients, either as a sole developer or providing extra capacity and expertise to a team.
In 2019 I created an online video training course, Machine Learning in JavaScript with TensorFlow.js, for developers who would like to use Machine Learning techniques for the web.
That’s keeping it rather brief! For further detail of my previous experience, see my LinkedIn profile, or for my full CV, please get in touch.
Education
BSc Computer Science, University of Manchester
Graduated in 2009 with 1st class honours, gaining a practical grounding in software development, plus a strong understanding of the theory which informs my work.
MSc Advanced Information Systems, Birkbeck, University of London
Awarded with merit in 2013, this advanced Computer Science degree gave me the confidence to take on more complex projects which require advanced use of algorithms (e.g. machine learning / AI) or database technology.
I’m now passing on the torch, educating others through my first online video course Machine Learning in JavaScript with TensorFlow.js.
